“Slated for Jan-Apr 2018 in north western Canada, 6 hours drive from any other town in a place of old-timey saloons and mountain forests, we will base the ongoing film collective in deep winter by the Alaskan border in a little town called Dawson City, next to the massive frozen-over Yukon river. 10 filmmakers will venture north to create solo film work over 3 months in both peace and ruckus amidst the kooky characters of the Westminster Hotel. Sled dogs will be racing through at some point, and us, The Weight of Mountains – cultivating a place for the on-site testings of filmmakers with digital and celluloid brainwaves; who capture anthropic-mystic readings, who discover the real, the imagined, or the absorbed stories of humanity faced and placed in immensely wondrous, challenging, difficult, and simultaneously homey community environments worldwide. In 2018, it’s the Yukon that captures us with it’s psycho-geography; we want to look beyond stereotype, beyond first impressions.
Every two years, TWOM acts as an ongoing project with a new collective of filmmakers for durational ‘performance of place’; reading the site and the evocations of place as it occurs in us. One day we might look back at the world through so many eyes as we can gather together with meaning and adventure. A film collective’s birds eye view of the world as it looks back at us with the distance of the future, and the floating freedom of non-compliance to the rules of one place alone. We want you to be a part of it. We see The Weight of Mountains as nomad, as blind sentinel, as test tube or petrie dish, as romantic idealism, and as an imagined mythic place of new reality and a ‘flurry of worlding’.”
Sincerely, join us,
-Melody Woodnutt
