Help build our FAVA Community

Are you an experienced camera operator, sound technician, or colour grader? Have you mastered the art of grant writing or storyboarding? Do you have a desire to share your acquired knowledge with emerging artists in our community?

FAVA is developing a roster of instructors for a variety of member-to-member learning opportunities. Instructors are paid $40 per hour, and instructing opportunities range from two-hour sessions to ongoing mentorships.

Call for Instructors


The Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta (FAVA) is accepting applications for Class Instructor for the upcoming Main Course class.

Main Course is one of FAVA’s long-standing classes. This 12-class course is a follow up to our Video Kitchen Class, providing intermediate training in the basics of digital video and film production. Classes are comprised of a mixture of lecture-based learning and hands on practical exercises, with a curriculum that is tailored to the interests and skill level of class participants. Outside of class time, each participant produces their own short four to six minute video using FAVA equipment.

Class Dates: Saturdays 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. February 26th – May 21st, 2022, with no class April 16th.

Location: The Orange Hub (10045 156 Street NW)

The Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta (FAVA) is accepting applications for Class Instructor for the upcoming Intro to Screenwriting class.

This 10 week workshop-style class leads participants through the development of a one-hour teleplay, short form, or feature length script. Instruction will cover script formatting, story structure, character development, and all other essential elements of storytelling.

Class Dates: Tuesdays 6:30 p.m. – 9p.m. February 15th – April 19th, 2022.

Location: The Orange Hub (10045 156 Street NW)

Call for Volunteers

Equipment Rentals:

When: Recurring, Fridays from 10am-12pm.

Description: Assist with packing and preparing equipment rentals.

Time commitment needed will depend on size and number of bookings

Not only will this assist the equipment rentals department, but volunteers will also gain experience handling, testing, and working with our large inventory of equipment. 

Skills needed: Ability to lift up to 50lbs. Knowledge of basic film/video/lighting/grip equipment is an asset.

FAVA Bucks Earned: $20/hr

Equipment Rentals:

When: 4-8 hours, by avalibility before Aug 20th

Description: Rentals is looking for a volunteer to help calibrate our Heden YMER-3 Follow Focus, to pair it with our inventory of cinema lenses!

The volunteer will pair the motor, make lens profiles inside the handset, match lenses to the correct focus discs, and make a document for members to refer to when renting our lenses and follow focus.

Skills needed: Experience with cinema camera lenses, and cinema cameras.

FAVA Bucks Earned: $20/hr

Consessions and Event Support

When: Friday, October 22nd, 6-8:30pm

Description: FAVA is hosting a private screening for participants of the Super 8 Workshop. We require someone to assist in set-up/take-down of the screening, as well as manage the sale of snacks and drinks during the screening.

Skills needed: Proserve certification and previous events experience are considered an asset.

Crew Call

Starlight Cinema Screen Set-up:

When: Weekends beginning in September 2021

Description: FAVA is looking for a member to work some upcoming events. This will be a PAID gig with multiple sessions. You will be tasked with setting up the Starlight Cinema screen, as well as running the screening, and teardown afterwards. After a few sessions as a crew member helping an experienced staff member, we will be looking to advance you to a Crew Lead position at different events. Crew Leads will have to be able to do all set-up, screening, and teardown tasks, as well as drive the van we rent and return said van and FAVA’s gear the next morning.

We would require your services on weekends starting in September, including some out-of-town days. The hours for each are 7pm-12am.

The pay is $200/day for regular crew, and $300/day for Crew Leads. FAVA will cover hotel costs for out-of-town screenings. Food will be provided at each event, and food costs will be covered per diem for out-of-town screenings.

Skills needed: A/V experience is an asset but not necessary. Driving is an asset for out-of-town screenings.

Pay: $200/day for regular crew, $300/day for Crew Leads
