FAVA FEST culminates with FAVA GALA – and this year it’s one big house party! Join us at the Orange Hub to mix and mingle with Northern Alberta’s filmmakers, take a gamble on our silent auction, and discover all of the new facilities FAVA has to offer. We’ll celebrate the best of the festival with cash awards and honour film, video and media art in style.

Stick around after the awards for a closer look at FAVA headquarters. We’ll be revealing the results of our Super8 Challenge – one roll of film, in-camera editing only, and everyone sees it for the first time together! We also have a new work from FAVA member Scott Portingale “Across the land” – an experimental “one shot” time-lapse film that transports the viewer form one side of Canada (Alaska border) to the other (Cape Spear, Newfoundland).

Have you heard about FAVA’s newest addition to the tool crib? We’ll have a demo of our ARRI Alexa XT Plus so we can all dream big media arts dreams!

Join us as we shine a spotlight on the excellent work being made right here in Edmonton and Alberta.

Outstanding Achievements Award Recipients

Alex Viszmeg

I was incarnated into this life near a town called Burford. It was a tobacco farming area in Ontario. If there was a movie made of the members of my family it would have been titled “Me, starring Me”. Me being the individual selves. Such is life in modern times and it would be a quagmire without some sense of compassion and absurdity.  I managed to maneuver through the world looking for a way to express myself artistically and I discovered film. Went to a film school ‘ Ryerson’, at the same time as my brother Joe in 1974 -78. There was a feeling of comradery and purpose at Ryerson and I was able to find a space to contemplate the deeper meanings behind circumstance; or at least I tried. Worked on a few low budget features in Toronto but heard that things were happening in Edmonton. Came out in the fall of 79 and got a job as a school portrait photographer, then a Church congregation photographer, then a sound recordist, then a cinematographer. In time, I found myself working on films being made by members of FAVA. In the midst of this I was producing some works of my own with themes of peoples ambiguous connection with nature, society and themselves.  Like being in a poorly crafted reality show, I became confused by ambiguity. These days the cinematic curve of my life has become the making of ambient sound tracks on the computer and thinking of putting it to a video about society in motion. Trains come to mind as it was by train that most people came out west in the earlier days. Change and impermanence are a certainty that can’t be denied.

Joseph Viszmeg

Joseph Viszmeg graduated from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Toronto, 1979 with a Bachelor Degree in Film. He directed films and videos in all genres and was an accomplished editor as well. Joe taught at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and had a diverse background that included: social work with people who are cognitively disabled, teaching at-risk youth, writing, and film co-operative administration.

He was a multiple Gemini award-winning director for his films In My Own Time (1995) and My Healing Journey (1999), which were co-produced by the National Film Board. In My Own Time also received an award at the Hot Docs festival (1996) in the biography/history category. Both films are autobiographical accounts of living with a terminal cancer diagnosis.

Viszmeg also worked with Karvonen Films. Ltd. on a number of documentaries including: Great Northern ForestPrairie Grasslands, and In Wildness series. He received an AMPIA award for Best Editor, non-dramatic for both Great Northern Forest and Prairie Grasslands, along with Best director nominations.

In the narrative genre, Joseph directed City of Champions in 1990. The film follows twenty four hours in the lives of three “beautiful losers”. Viszmeg worked as co-producer, director and writer. It was one of only sixty English language films to represent the past eighty years of Canadian cinema at Telefilm’s Canadian Film Retrospective at the George Pompideau Centre in Paris, 1993.
