FAVA FEST 2022

FAVA is excited to present FAVA FEST 2022!

Our annual event is a celebration of members and some of the amazing work they’ve produced over the last 24 months.

With something for everyone including documentaries, narratives, music videos, animation and more, FAVA FEST 2022 brought the unique visions, perspectives and stories from FAVA members together under one festival May 24nd – 28th, 2022. The awards are to be presented at the Film & Screen Media Year-End Event on November 24th! 

The program and delivery of this year’s festival will be designed to follow COVID-19 regulations and best practices.

About The Festival

FAVA FEST showcases our member’s works and put on a big party to celebrate outstanding achievements in film, video and media art in our community. Learn more about the festival here.

Here is what you can expect for this years event, screening May 24th – 28th:

NIGHTLY CINEMA SCREENINGS @ 7 PM (Tuesday – Saturday) 

Join us in the Orange Hub Theatre all week to view some fantastic independent film and media art made by FAVA filmmakers, and see what is in the running for the Excellence Awards at this year’s GALA. Tickets are by donation and available at the door. Did we mention there will be popcorn? View the screening schedule below!

ARTIST TALKBACK – Friday, May 27, 2022 

Following the program on Friday, there will be a filmmaker’s talkback session with Hands That Bind writer/director Kyle Armstrong, moderated by none other than the amazing Christian Zyp host of Moving Radio on CJSR FM. This artist talkback is anticipated to start right around 9:45pm.

BBQ & Mixer @ 5:30 PM Saturday, May 28th

We invite you to join us for a BBQ and Filmmaker Mixer on the final day of screenings.  Enjoy some FREE food and tour The Orange Hub with fellow filmmakers and FAVA Staff!

AWARDS PRESENTATION AT THE FILM & SCREEN MEDIA YEAR-END CELEBRATION – November 24th, 2022

FAVA and the ESIO invite you to join us for a year-end celebration on Thursday, November 24th. There, in addition to a variety of showcases, we will be presenting this year’s FAVA FEST Award Winners and Production Grant Recipients. Screening Schedule

 

Screenings will start at 7pm and we will run through all the programming with only small breaks in-between. Each day has about two and a half hours of material, and each screening day will finish with a feature film. Below is the anticipated schedule for FAVA FEST 2022. Submissions

 

Thank you to all who submitted to FAVA FEST 2022! Since submitting, you are now in for consideration for the following awards:

Production Grants for New Work:

  • Helen Folkmann Film Award
    • The Helen Folkmann award supports the creation of a non-documentary celluloid-based film project. Project must be shot on celluloid film (i.e. 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, 70mm) Prizes: $1000 Cash + $1500 FAVA production credit.
  • Lisa Trofimova Video Award
    • The Lisa Trofimova award supports the creation of a non-documentary video-based project. Prizes: $1000 Cash + $1500 FAVA production credit.
  • Joe Vizsmeg Documentary Award
    • The Joe Viszmeg award supports the creation of a documentary film or video project. Prizes: $1000 Cash + $1500 FAVA production credit.
  • Alex Thomas-Haug Emerging Artist Award
    • The Alex Thomas Haug Award supports the creation of a new work by an emerging filmmaker. An emerging artist is one who has less than three years of practice, has completed basic training, has completed at least one independent film or video artwork. Prizes: $500 Cash + $500 FAVA production credit.

Excellence Awards for Finished Work:

  • Outstanding Short Form Narrative (Under 40 minutes)
  • Outstanding Long Form Narrative (Over 40 minutes)
  • Outstanding Short Form Documentary (Under 40 minutes)
  • Outstanding Long Form Documentary (Over 40 minutes)
  • Outstanding Music Video
  • Outstanding Inter-Art Performance or Installation
  • Outstanding Experimental
  • Outstanding Animation

All projects submitted to an Excellence Awards category will automatically be considered in the following Craft Awards categories.

  • Performance Award
  • Sound Design Award
  • Editing Award

Please note that while we accept work created over the past 24 months, only work that has never been submitted to FAVA FEST before can be submitted. This includes work that was submitted but not accepted.
