FAVA Exhibition

Join us October 5-7, 2023 in The Orange Hub for our open house, community event!

FAVA EXHIBITION is an immersive, three-day event that highlights the full spectrum of FAVA’s vast services. You’ll get the opportunity to see all of FAVA’s amazing spaces for artists, see FAVA’s equipment in action, talk with FAVA staff and members, and witness a fantastic demonstration of the XR Volume Screen from Northern Gateway Films while talented local musicians perform alongside it.

Open House

FAVA moved to the Orange Hub in 2019, just before a certain global pandemic shut everything down. Since then, we haven’t had a dedicated opportunity to show off the spaces that have become available to FAVA members, and more recently, how we’ve renovated these spaces to become even better.

The open house portion of Exhibition will take place each day from 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM throughout FAVA’s spaces in The Orange Hub. During that time, you can come enjoy guided tours of the spaces, demonstrations of equipment in our equipment depot (Room 149), and information from FAVA’s Membership and Programming Managers.

Exhibition

FAVA offers live streaming and switching production services, and we couldn’t be more excited to demonstrate this service through live performance. Each night, as the talented musicians play, FAVA will be recording and demonstrating the technology in action, which will be perfectly complemented by Northern Gateway Films’ XR Volume screen.

The XR Volume is a massive LED screen featuring camera tracking and a live rendered background. We had a demonstration of this technology of our “Year-End Event” in 2022. This technology is used to create a “virtual production,” one of the most exciting new developments in filmmaking, which you may have heard as the technology behind some of the most exciting movies and TV shows this decade (The Mandalorian, The Batman, etc.). Virtual production allows creators to experience real-time response against a digital background, offering better immersion for talent, and more immersive lighting.

We will be using Northern Gateway Films’ virtual production setup with the musicians to beautifully capture their performance with our gear.

Event Schedule

OCT 5 - THURSDAY

  • 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM: Open House
  • 6:30 PM – 10:00 PM: Tamarack Cunningham (Room 381)

Tamarack Cunningham
is an Edmonton singer-songwriter who blends garage rock, jazz, traditional Metis folk into angry, musically ambitious indie-prog-folk.

“People keep calling me a folk singer, which isn’t wrong, exactly. Certainly, there are superficial similarities (acoustic guitar, shaggy hair, plaid shirts). I’ve spent years working in a garage band, a jazz ensemble, a métis dance band, an afropop group and a mexican son jarocho collective, and I’m still exploring and combining those influences. These projects have made me an ambitious technical musician and an idiosyncratic lyricist.

I strive for energetic music, strong hooks, and making the audience move. I took the name Tamarack because it helps me break out a little farther from the expectations of singer-songwriter folk; to play a little louder, to compose in different, sometimes challenging ways, to write weirder, wilder songs. And also because I like trees.”

OCT 6 - FRIDAY

  • 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM: Open House
  • 6:30 PM – 10:00 PM: Cam Neufeld and the Gadjo Collective (Room 381)

The Road to Django

The Road to Django is a show presented by the Gadjo Collective that  celebrates the life of Django Reinhardt, the founder of what we know of a “gypsy jazz” and the music of the Roma. The idea is to extrapolate backwards to the origin of Romani people in India and follow the Roma trail from India to Spain and explore the music along the way. The show is tailored to fit the event, from intimate concerts to Balkan and swing dance parties, from solo performances to festivals with up to 14 musicians and 8 dancers. This show draws on a talented pool of musicians each of whom provide their unique musicality and energy to make and shape this original and exciting show.

OCT 7 - SATURDAY

  • 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM: Open House
  • 6:30 PM – 10:00 PM: The Takleef Ensemble (Room 381)

The Takleef Ensemble

is a new group working in the multiple disciplines of sound, poetry, video and contemporary art. Featuring guitar, sax, spoken word, violin, bells, percussion, electronics, clarinet and tanpura, the group is getting ready to release its first full-length double LP in late 2022 or 2023. Takleef Ensemble is an ongoing effort to unbind burden, difficulty and sorrow — expect poetry, personal accounts and haunting melody.
