Instructor: Sharlene Millang

Film production was not on Sharlene’s radar … she kinda “fell into it” due to her combination of business skills and education (BA – English/Business; BA – Business Management). Her current full-time job is as Executive Administrator at Catholic Social Services, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer. Her passion is on stage and in front of the camera … it’s so much fun to be someone else for a little while!

In 2010, Sharlene responded to a casting call for a web series, and she was chosen. It was her first exposure to working with a film crew, and she hasn’t looked back since. She met Daniel Foreman on that set, and they hit it off and started collaborating on some short films he was doing through FAVA’s Main Course (the name for the Intermediate Filmmaking course at the time). As they worked together, Dan said … “you’re a producer,” to which she emphatically replied, “no, I’m not”. In 2012, Daniel and Sharlene presented the first Edmonton Short Film Festival gala. The ESFF celebrated its 10-year anniversary last year and this year introduced a division of ESFF called Local Heroes Film Festival. LHFF is the all-Alberta arm of the Festival, sharing Alberta short films throughout Alberta at free community screenings. Together, Dan and Sharlene own and operate three production companies (Treaty 6 Productions, Groove Soldier Productions, Horned Serpent Productions) and remain the Creative Directors of the Edmonton Short Film Festival.

After ten years of producing short films, including an award-winning animated series, “Raven Adventures,” Sharlene and Dan were awarded Talent to Watch funding to create their first feature film, “Abducted”. A significant part of Sharlene’s work is applying for grants, and she is looking forward to sharing her knowledge with you.
