FAVA FEST April 18-22, 2017

FAVA FEST 2017 festival details are now online! Join us April 18 – 22 as we celebrate our members’ work. This year the festival will include: an Opening Nigiht Kick Off revealing our Awards of Excellence recipients and the premiere of a new commissioned work by filmmaker Kyle Armstrong & musician Bradley J. Sime; the Best of the Fest – films by FAVA filmmakers; and the Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour. We’re thrilled to announce Bruce McDonald (Hard Core Logo) and Daniel MacIvor (Governor General award-winning playwright) will be showcased at our Friday Night Feature. We’ll screen their recently acclaimed film Weirdos and follow it up with an in-depth conversation with both artists in attendance. Closing night finds us back at FAVA headquarters for our Backyard Bash where we will announce the recipients of our Production and Distriution Awards, as well as our Audience Choice Award, and celebrate Selwyn Jacob – recipient of FAVA’s Outstanding Achievement Award.

If you’ve made a film, video, or interdisciplinary work of media art, completed after July 1, 2015, consider applying for one of our eight Awards of Excellence:

  • Outstanding Short Narrative Film or Video (under 40 minutes) 
  • Outstanding Short Documentary Film or Video (under 40 minutes) 
  • Outstanding Long Form Narrative Film or Video (over 40 minutes) 
  • Outstanding Long Form Documentary Film or Video (over 40 minutes) 
  • Outstanding Music Video 
  • Outstanding Experimental Film or Video 
  • Outstanding Animated Film or Video 
  • Outstanding Inter-Art Performance or Installation 

2017 Craft Awards

We are continuing to celebrate craft categories in the following categories: Outstanding Cinematography, Screenwriting, Performance, Production Design, Sound Design, and Editing. All projects submitted to the Awards of Excellence will automatically be considered for all of these craft categories.

2017 Production Awards

Deadline to submit is January 16, 2017, 11:59pm MST.

If you have an idea for a new project, consider applying for one of our four Production Awards:

Helen Folkmann Film Award – $1000 cash PLUS $1500 FAVA production credit 

  • awarded to one non-documentary film project
  • project must be shot on an analog film format (i.e. 8mm, 16mm, 35mm, 70mm)

Lisa Trofimova Video Award – $1000 cash PLUS $1500 FAVA production credit

  • awarded to one non-documentary video project
  • project must be shot on a digital video format

Joe Viszmeg Documentary Award – $1000 cash PLUS $1500 FAVA production credit

  • awarded to one documentary film or video project

Alex Thomas-Haug Emerging Artist Award – $500 cash PLUS $500 FAVA production credit

  • awarded to one film or video project by an emerging artist. 
  • an emerging artist is one who: has less than three years of practice; has completed basic training; and, has completed at least one independent film or video artwork.

Any FAVA member in good standing is eligible to apply for any of these awards. This means new or existing members. Call (780) 429-1671 or email membership@fava.ca to buy or renew your membership. Associate memberships cost $85+GST annually.

Eight awards of excellence will be presented at the FAVA GALA as a part of our annual FAVA FEST: Film and Video Arts Festival.

Outstanding Short Narrative Film or Video (under 40 minutes)

Outstanding Short Documentary Film or Video (under 40 minutes)

Outstanding Long Form Narrative Film or Video (over 40 minutes)

Outstanding Long Form Documentary Film or Video (over 40 minutes)

Outstanding Music Video

Outstanding Experimental Film or Video

Outstanding Animated Film or Video

Outstanding Inter-Art Performance or Installation*

* This is an open-ended category for multi-disciplinary or gallery based work, or media art that extends beyond single channel presentations.

ELIGIBILITY

All FAVA members in good standing are eligible to apply. Members in good standing are defined as those who have paid their membership fees and have NO outstanding debts beyond 90 days.

  • In accordance with Board policy, all FAVA members including Staff and Board Members are encouraged to apply.
  • Only directors or producers who own the rights to the project and retain creative control are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants are welcome for projects completed in the 18 months previous to the application deadline (this year, projects completed between July 1st 2015 and January 9th 2017 will be considered).
  • Projects that have been submitted previously are not eligible to be resubmitted.
  • FAVA members are welcome to apply with as many eligible projects in as many different categories as they wish. Please fill out a separate entry form for each application.
  • If the film or video contains third party content (such as video, music or images), applicant must have the right to use that content.
  • The film or video must not infringe third party copyrights or other intellectual property.
  • Award recipients grant FAVA the right to use publicity materials related to the film or video, and to broadcast or screen clips to a maximum of 30 seconds, for promotional purposes.
  • If the jury decides that a project is more appropriate for a different award category, FAVA reserves the right to move the application.

ASSESSMENT OF SUBMISSIONS

The sole basis for assessment of all submissions will be the film or video itself. A jury of FAVA members and non-FAVA industry peers will be tasked with reviewing and evaluating the submissions, and selecting the award recipients.

Jurors are not expected to provide an individual adjudication of each submission, and no specific comments about individual applications are recorded or made available to applicants.

If the jury decides that a category lacks an entry deserving of the Award of Excellence, FAVA reserves the right not to present an award in that category.

Award recipients will be announced at the FAVA FEST.

The filmmaker agrees to allow FAVA to keep a copy of the submitted work in the FAVA archive for internal reference.

FESTIVAL SCREENINGS

By submitting this application, the filmmaker agrees to allow FAVA to screen the work for the public during FAVA FEST.

FAVA does NOT commit to a public screening of every film or video submitted.

FAVA FEST Production Awards

FAVA is pleased to announce the following production awards to be presented at the annual FAVA GALA as a part of FAVA FEST: Film and Video Arts Festival.

  • Applications are welcome for projects of any length.
  • If the jury decides that a project is more appropriate for a different award category, FAVA reserves the right to move the application.
  • Successful applicants will be required to include the FAVA logo in the tail credits of their completed project.
  • For screening and archival purposes, successful applicants will be required to submit their completed project in the following formats:

1) a high resolution Quicktime file (Apple Pro Res 422 1020 x 1080 in native frame rate).

2) a DVD

ASSESSMENT OF SUBMISSIONS

The basis for assessment of all proposals will be the written application and support material submitted by the applicant. A jury of peers will be tasked with reviewing, evaluating, and selecting the successful proposals.

Proposals will be evaluated on:

  • artistic merit of the proposal
  • feasibility of the proposal

Jurors are not expected to provide an individual adjudication of each applicant, and no specific comments about individual applications are recorded or made available to applicants.

Award winners will be announced at the FAVA FEST.
